MiAMI BEACH, FL

When tasked with the challenge of maximizing the program of this house on a rather conservatively sized lot, we wanted to steer away from the “white box” that seems to dominate the area. While designing to keep all elements of the desired program, we became inspired by nature and specifically; the canopy concept. This being one, unifying roof element where separate elements suspend below. These elements, or spaces of the home such as, living areas, kitchen, and bedrooms are conceptualized as volumetric elements all unified by a singular roof element. These volumes, some extending farther outwards or inwards than others, begin to frame indoor and outdoor spaces, sheltered from the roof above. The architectural volumes and 2-dimensional shading elements harmoniously blend together through the use of raw and refined materiality, composing unique facades that break down the scale of the residence, returning it to its tropical context.
